  3. Consider the following patient:

  5. spectacle Rx: -4.25 = -1.25 x 180  (at corneal plane)
  6. K-reading:  43.00 @ 180; 45.00 x 090

In this case there is more corneal toricity than spectacle cylinder.  This results in over-correction of the required cylinder by the lacrimal cylinder which means there is a -0.75 x 090 residual astigmatism with a non-flexing RGP lens.  If the RGP lens is made thin enough to flex on the eye (it bends towards the shape of the cornea) it will correct the residual astigmatism.  The general rule is that if the cornea has with-the-rule (WTR) toricity and there would be against-the-rule (ATR) residual astigmatism with a non-flexing RGP, lens flexure will correct the residual astigmatism.

  10. A spherical hydrogel lens would result in 1.25 D. uncorrected cylinder.  A toric hydrogel lens would be a viable option.
